What Are Teeth Made Of?

There are many different parts to the individual tooth, from the top layer down into the inner pulp. We have many different teeth of all shapes and sizes, too. Molars, canines, incisors, and premolars are the different type of teeth, but each tooth contains the same inner workings! Here is a brief overview of all the different layers of the tooth.

what are teeth made of

Enamel

The enamel is the outmost layer of the tooth; it’s the white, hard surface of the tooth that is actually the most mineralized tissue in your entire body! While enamel is tough and strong, it can be damaged by decay caused by sugar or poor oral hygiene habits.

Dentin

The layer beneath the enamel is called the dentin. It has millions of small tubes that lead directly to the dental pulp. If you experience tooth sensitivity, it is because the food or water in your mouth has reached the layer of the dentin, and the temperature difference will feel uncomfortable. If you have tooth decay that has eaten through your enamel, it will next move on to the dentin.

Pulp

The pulp is the soft tissue found in the center of your tooth, and it is in all your teeth. The pulp contains the nerve tissue and blood vessels that give life to your tooth. If you are experiencing tooth pain, it is because decay has reach all the way down to the pulp of your tooth.

Root

The root anchors your tooth and holds your tooth in place. The root makes up two-thirds of your tooth!

So what is the composition of a tooth? Each tooth is composed of calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals. They are strong but still require your attention and care. Don’t forget to brush and floss your teeth daily, as well as see your dentist for your regular check-ups and cleanings.
