How Does Enamel Wear Down?

Tooth erosion is a result of acid wearing away your enamel. Your enamel is the dense mineral substance that protects your teeth. Even though it is the hardest substance in your body, it can wear down from acid as a result of too many sugary foods and drinks.

You cannot grow your enamel back. This is why it is so important to protect it and to try to mineralize your teeth through fluoride.

Acid is the Main Cause of Tooth Enamel Loss

Acid eats away at your enamel, and over time it will erode it so much that you may start to experience tooth sensitivity. When your tooth enamel has worn away, your teeth are no longer protected and are more vulnerable to decay.

Your mouth will produce acid from the food that you eat, but sugars and carbs are the worst offenders. Other contributors to acid production in your mouth include:

  • Dry Mouth
  • Acid Reflux
  • Gastrointestinal Tract Problems
  • Acidic medicines like aspirin or antihistamines

Having a thin enamel could also be genetic. Some sufferers of bruxism (teeth grinding) may also grind away their tooth enamel. Even if your mouth just produces a lot of friction, or if your teeth have a lot of wear, the production of acid in your mouth can go up significantly.

Soda Drinks Are Very Bad for Your Enamel

Unsurprisingly, the sugar in soda and the bacteria in your mouth will create a form of acid that is devastating to your enamel. Fruit juice, sugary snacks, starchy snacks, and even flavored waters are all damaging to enamel, as well.

Effects of Enamel Erosion

Enamel erosion will eventually lead to sensitive teeth, discolored teeth, increased decay, tooth fracturing, and translucent parts on your teeth. However, you can stop enamel erosion by eating a healthy diet, using a fluoride toothpaste, and visiting your dentist regularly.
