6 Common Causes of Toothaches

Nobody wants to deal with a toothache. It’s inconvenient and downright painful! So, why do people get toothaches? Here are a few of the top reasons why you might experience a toothache:

1. Teeth Grinding

When you grind your teeth, you wear down the layers of enamel. The closer you get to the nerve, the more discomfort you will feel. If teeth grinding is a problem for you, a mouth guard might be the solution you’re looking for.

2. Abnormal Bite

Having an abnormal bite can put a large amount of pressure on your teeth, and when this pressure intensifies, it can cause your tooth to ache.

3. Tooth Trauma

If you’ve recently experienced dental trauma of any kind, perhaps while playing a contact sport, you could be at risk of a toothache. If you’re experiencing swelling after dental trauma, make sure to ice the affected area and contact Dr. Stratman.

4. Infection

Infections often cause inflammation, which can manifest as a toothache. If you ever get cuts on your mouth or gum, make sure to rinse with salt water and keep them clean while they heal.

5. Temperature Sensitivity

Many people are sensitive to very hot or very cold beverages and food, which can cause toothaches. This sensitivity could be because of tooth decay or a loose filling. Be careful what you eat and drink, and use Sensodyne or a similar toothpaste to decrease sensitivity in your mouth.

6. Recent Dental Treatment

If you’ve just had dental treatment, you could be experiencing a temporary toothache. In most cases, this discomfort will disappear in a few days. If it doesn’t, contact our office.
